Suffix and Preffix

Suffixes and Prefixes, Definition, Meaning, Examples;

In this article, you will learn and understand suffixes and prefixes and will be able to use them easily.

What are suffixes and spelling rules for them;

A suffix is an alphabet or group of alphabets added to the end of a word to form a new word, usually one in the same class as another word.  A suffix follows a root word.  The suffix can be used at the end of a word or the end of the root word. It consists of two to four alphabets.  Suffixes include things like "-ly" and "-ness." While using Suffixes or Prefixes we cannot use random letters and alter the meaning because there are spelling rules in English that must need to be followed. These rules help us to learn and use them easily.

 Here we have discussed how  to use Suffixes and prefixes while following the spelling rules.

  • While using suffixes sometimes we change the spelling of the word.
  • All the words which ends with consonants except ''y'' we can use suffix along them like ''slow---slowly'',  ''quick--- quickly''.
  • For The words that end with 'y' we have to remove y with ''I'' and then add the suffix like ''Beauty--- beautiful'', and ''merry--- merriment'', but if the word has a vowel before y then y will not change a like ''play'' will be ''played'' or ''playing''.
  • The words which ends with ''e'' are replaced by ''ity''. We just omit the e and use itmid-midnight, ty, or y in the end like ''creative---creativity''.
  • For monosyllabic words we replace ''e'' with suffixes like able and age. like ''love---lovable'' and ''remove---removable''.
  • But in some words we don't omit e and use it with suffixes like ''manageable, removeable.
  • While using suffixes like ''tion'' and ''sion'' we remove the silent 'e' or the last consonant of the word like ''multiple---multiplication'' and ''divide---division.
The following are the commonly used suffixes:

Prefixes:

Prefixes are letter combinations that people add to words at the beginning to form new words with unique meanings. Prefixes can entirely change the meaning of the word they can change the whole sense. With the use of only one two or five letters, we can change the whole meaning

Rules while adding Prefixes:

  • While adding prefixes we don't remove any alphabet just add the prefix with the base word and don't change the spelling.
  • Sometimes when we use prefixes like ''non'' or ''ex''  we have to add a hyphen between the base word and the prefixes like ''non-living and non-creative''.
