What is Articles?

An article is a form of adjective. A, an, and the are Articles in grammar.  They work with nouns to make noun phrases and show that noun is used simply. The article also determines the value of nouns. It can be a person, place, or thing.


Vowels:

Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, Uu

Consonants:

b,c,d,f,j,k,l,m,n,p,q,r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z





Kinds of Articles:

There are two kinds of Articles.

The Indefinite Article

The Definite Article


1. The Indefinite Articles:

A and an are the indefinite articles. We use ''A'' before a word that begins with a consonant sound and ''An'' with a word starting with a vowel sound. The indefinite Articles can only be used with things that we can count. The use of indefinite Articles is for non-specific things. We use 'A' when we see something for the first time and 'An' when a person see something randomly.

For a better understanding let's see some examples:


  • A monkey stole my banana.
  • This is a chair.
  • The Chinese chef cooks delicious food for a minister.
  • He is an excellent dancer.
  • I want to adopt an adorable cat.
  • There is school.


2. The Definite Articles:

''The'' is the definite Article. It is used with nouns to show a specific noun already used in a phrase or sentence.  It can also be used if the speaker and listener know what the is indicating. It is used:

When we talk about a specific person or a thing:

  • The book he wants to purchase is mine.
  • The dog is sleeping on the couch.
  • She has gone to the park for a walk.

When a single noun is representing a whole pack:

  • The daffodil is a beautiful flower.
  • The Lion is a brave animal.
  • The girl is sitting in the class.

With the names of rivers, seas, oceans, and groups of islands:

  • The Amazon is one of the largest forests in the world.
  • The West Indies is known for great cricketers.
  • K2 is the second-highest peak in the world.

Before the names of Books and Newspapers:

  • The Times is Published in London.
  • The Muslims follow the teachings of the Quran.
  • Christians follow the teachings of the Bible.


Before names of unique things:

  • The sun shines in the sky.
  • The Earth revolves around the sun.
  • The star shines in the sky.
